Clack, Department of Computer Science,\u00a0University College London has a useful webpage that defines &#8220;A [perfect] PhD Thesis for London University \/ Computer Science UCL.&#8221;\u00a0Clack\u00a0\u00a0is not describing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neuro-memento-mori.com\/teaching\/2015\/09\/26\/thesis-structure-compilation-based\/\">compilation-based structure<\/a> here. Therefore this post is of particular relevance for those of you planning\u00a0 a computer science PhD thesis that is <strong>not<\/strong> based around three published papers.\u00a0Clack&#8217;s &#8216;perfect thesis structure&#8217; is as follows. My comments added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Introduction<\/strong><br \/>\nSet the scene and <em>problem statement<\/em>.<br \/>\nIntroduce structure of thesis, state contributions (3-5).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Background<\/strong><br \/>\nDemonstrate wider appreciation (context).<br \/>\nProvide <i>motivation<\/i>. The problem statement and the motivation state how you want the PhD to be judged &#8211; as engineering, scientific method, theory, philosophy, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Jane: Sections scientific method, theory are similar to\u00a0the Literature Review<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Related Work<\/strong><br \/>\nSurvey and critical assessment.<br \/>\nRelation to own work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Jane: This is\u00a0equivalent to the main Literature Review<\/p>\n<p><strong>4-6. Analysis, design, implementation and interpretation of results<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Critical assessment of own work<\/strong><br \/>\nState hypothesis, and demonstrate precision, thoroughness, contribution, and comparison with closest rival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Jane: you might also refer\u00a0again\u00a0to key works cited in 2 and 3 here, briefly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. Further Work<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> 9.
