Overview."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before we start, let&#8217;s note\u00a0that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coetail.com\/priyavenugopal\/2014\/02\/25\/doodling-effectively\/\" target=\"_blank\">doodling\u00a0during the class is encouraged<\/a>\u00a0and making\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/explore\/mind-maps\/\">mind maps throughout your research is recommended<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In these posts\u00a0we look closely at the Literature Review and its\u00a0characteristics.\u00a0We consider\u00a0how to structure this chapter which is expected\u00a0to describe, summarise, evaluate, clarify and\/or integrate existing\u00a0primary or original scholarship by\u00a0accredited scholars and\u00a0researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The Literature\u00a0Review is an early chapter, often placed\u00a0right after the introduction.\u00a0It should show the reader, especially your PhD\u00a0examiners, that you know the field(s) and can identify and critically appraise key texts in an unbiased way. It\u00a0demonstrates your\u00a0credibility as a\u00a0writer. It sets the tone and reassures the examiner that you know your stuff. It is drafted during\u00a0Year One and then updated as necessary throughout your research. It should shine by the time of submission.<\/p>\n<p>It \u00a0should be organised around, and related directly to, your\u00a0thesis or research question.\u00a0This chapter of your thesis from most\u00a0other chapters in that you do<strong> not<\/strong>\u00a0introduce your own, new primary scholarship. Nor do you offer your opinion. The focus of a literature review is to summarise and synthesise the arguments and\u00a0ideas of others without adding new contributions. It often\u00a0traces the intellectual progression of the field(s) your are reviewing, and it usually describes\u00a0major\u00a0debates, showing that you knows the ins and outs, the details of key ideas and texts. This includes a discussion of counter arguments and it is usual to\u00a0identify areas of controversy in the literature.\u00a0Your\u00a0summary and synthesis will\u00a0lead the reader logically to your explanation of the gap in the literature, to the questions that you have formulated that need further research.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before we start, let&#8217;s note\u00a0that doodling\u00a0during the class is encouraged\u00a0and making\u00a0mind maps throughout your research is recommended.
