This can be modest!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What does a PhD demonstrate?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u202f Demonstrates you are able to later take on independent, long-\u00adterm research commitments<\/li>\n<li>\u202f A transformation to a professional researcher<\/li>\n<li>A pathway to employment within, and outside, academia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why do you want a PhD?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Important to keep re\ufb02ecting on this to self-motivate. There are many answers (e.g.)\u00a0Profession development, Personal development, Artistic development ,Developing self-confidence, Career development. <em>What are your reasons? Write them down.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Kinds of PhDs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 Opens up new area<\/li>\n<li>\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 Provides unifying framework<\/li>\n<li>\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 Resolves long-\u00ad\u2010standing question<\/li>\n<li>\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 Critique existing theory and practice<\/li>\n<li>\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 Understands and provides methodologies for new artistic practices<\/li>\n<li>\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 Thoroughly explores an area<\/li>\n<li>\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 Builds a new methodology for producing a system<\/li>\n<li>\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 Provides new software<\/li>\n<li>\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 Contradicts existing knowledge<\/li>\n<li>\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 Experimentally validates a theory<\/li>\n<li>\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 Derives superior algorithms<\/li>\n<li>\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 Develops a new tool for doing X<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>And there are others too.
